“Kim Ross' no-till training transformed my garden. Kim is an exceptional teacher whose depth of knowledge, practical wisdom, and engaging, fun teaching style make learning both enjoyable and inspiring. She empowers students with the confidence and skills to achieve outstanding results. I now grow abundant food with less work, minimal weeding, vastly improved soil, and no tilling. Weeds that do grow, usually where there is not enough mulch, come out easier and by the handful. Even the usually hard to remove thistles and dandelions can be pulled root and all with gentle pulling straight up. The results exceeded my expectations and keep improving every season.”

“Because of this community, I've had a huge success with converting my garden to no-till this year - which has resulted in the best garden I've ever grown! The weeds are finally under control, the soil retains moisture, and the plants are the biggest and healthiest I've ever grown. I'm looking forward to harvesting an abundance of produce soon and for a much simpler start to planting in the spring!!”

What You'll Learn Inside The Gardening Community

Growing vegetables with less work

Most gardening advice has you digging, watering, and weeding constantly. We flip that, cutting down on all three, so you can grow more food without giving up every weekend to your garden.

No-till vegetable gardening

No-till methods protect your soil, help it hold onto moisture, and mean less physical work year after year. Once you try it, it's hard to go back.

Starting seeds

Starting your own seeds is one of the most rewarding (and budget-friendly!) parts of growing your own food. We'll walk you through timing, technique, and getting your plants ready for the Canadian growing season.

Soil and compost

Healthy soil is where a great garden really starts. You'll learn how to work with what you've got to build a low-maintenance growing system that keeps getting better.

Garden planning

A garden that fits your space, your time, and your goals is a garden you'll actually enjoy using. We help you plan something realistic for whatever size space you're working with.

Growing food in different spaces

Why learn with Kim Ross?

Hi, I'm Kim! I'm a horticulture instructor and fifth-generation farm girl growing vegetables right here on the Canadian Prairies. I grow with less weeding, no watering, and no chemicals. Yes, it’s a pretty different way of doing things.

While you might see a stray weed here and there, the few that show up pop out with zero effort, no backbreaking hoeing or endless hours on your knees required.

I started teaching these methods after meeting so many people who wanted to grow their own food but couldn't keep up with the work "normal" gardening demands. I teach in-person workshops across Alberta and Saskatchewan, and built this community so more Canadians could get the same guidance, no matter where they live or how much space they have.

My goal for every member is the same: help you grow more food with less work, and make the whole thing feel doable, even fun!

Grow Healthier Crops with Higher Yields.

In a traditional garden, weeds grow rapidly and out pace the vegetable plants. In a no-till garden, the mulch prevents the weeds from germinating which gives the vegetable plants a head start. The canopy of the vegetable plants prevent further weeds from growing.

No-till gardening and mulching No-till gardening and mulching

No-till gardening and mulching

Mulch acts as a natural protective shield, locking moisture directly into the soil and preventing evaporation. On hot, windy days, traditional tilling strips away precious soil moisture fast.

Soil covered with mulch provides plants access to as much water as they need it, leading to healthier crops and far bigger yields.

The size difference is obvious, but check out that color contrast.

One head of broccoli went straight from the garden to the dinner plate in minutes, while the grocery store version logged thousands of miles.

Nothing beats the taste, color, and satisfaction of fresh homegrown produce.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start growing vegetables?

Pick your favourite crops, decide what you'd love to grow, and plan around the time and conditions you've got. Inside the community, you'll get practical gardening help at every stage, whether you're starting from zero or leveling up.

What vegetables are easy to grow in Canada?

Maximizing your harvest isn’t about picking "easy" vegetables, it's about matching each crop to the right container size and local season length. Every vegetable can thrive in local Canadian conditions when given the right care. Community lessons guide you through selecting the ideal container dimensions, optimizing growing timelines, and managing your crops to ensure every plant reaches full maturity.

How do I grow vegetables in pots or containers?

Container gardening works beautifully once you've got the right containers, the right growing media, and crops suited to your space. We cover small-space and container gardening throughout the community's lessons.

How do I grow a low-maintenance vegetable garden?

It starts with realistic planning, the right crop choices, and methods that cut back on unnecessary digging, watering, and weeding. Making gardening lower-maintenance isn't a bonus feature here, it's kind of the whole point.

What is no-till gardening?

No-till gardening means growing vegetables without digging up or turning the soil each season. It protects your soil structure, cuts down on weeds over time, and seriously reduces the physical work involved. It's one of the main methods you'll learn as an online community member.

How does no-till gardening and mulching help keep moisture in the soil?

When you till the soil, expose it to hot summer sun, or subject it to strong winds, moisture evaporates rapidly. Covering your soil with a thick layer of mulch acts as a protective blanket. It prevents evaporation and locks moisture into the ground so your plants can access as much water as they want, right when they need it—leading to healthier crops with significantly higher yields.

Why do no-till and mulched gardens produce such higher yields?

High yields happen when plants can spend all their energy growing vegetables instead of constantly fighting off stressors. With a no-till, mulched garden:

  • Consistent Moisture: Plants have steady access to water without drying out.
  • No Weed Competition: Mulch suppresses weeds, so your crops aren't competing for soil nutrients or water.
  • Disease Prevention: Covered soil prevents rain or irrigation from splashing dirt (and soil-borne pathogens) onto plant leaves.
  • Root Protection: Avoiding rototilling keeps root systems intact and undisturbed.
  • Cooler Soil: Mulch insulates the ground, keeping root temperatures cooler on hot summer days.

A stress-free plant focuses entirely on producing abundant, healthy produce!

How do I grow brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts) chemical-free?

Growing healthy, pest-free brassicas without chemical sprays comes down to timing, healthy soil management, and protective physical barriers like insect netting. For a complete, step-by-step guide to chemical-free brassicas, check out our blog post: Insect Netting in Canada: How to Grow Cabbage, Broccoli, and Cauliflower Chemical-Free

Can I really garden without watering?

Yes! By using no-till methods and building up organic mulch layers, you can dramatically improve your soil’s water retention capacity. Mulch acts as a barrier that slows down evaporation, keeping moisture trapped deep in the soil where roots need it. Curious about how this works on the Canadian Prairies? Read our detailed guide:
Can I Garden with No Water?

What is the best soil for a vegetable garden?

Healthy soil supports strong roots, holds moisture without drowning your plants, and delivers the nutrients your vegetables need. The right approach depends on what you're starting with and that's exactly what our soil and compost lessons help you figure out.

How much does the Kross Farm community cost?

Just $7.50/month, with no long-term commitment. That gets you online lessons, practical videos, a genuinely supportive community, member savings on select products, and the No-Till online class (usually $45 on its own).

Can I join if I only have a small space?

Absolutely. The methods you'll learn work for any size of growing space, from a few balcony pots to a full backyard garden. Our goal is to help you make the most of whatever space, time, and resources you've got.

Is this an in-person garden service?

Nope! The Kross Farm online community is friendly, self-paced online education and support, not a hands-on gardening, landscaping, or garden maintenance service.

Ready to start growing with some support?

You don't have to figure out your garden alone and honestly, it's a lot more fun when you don't.
